Outdoor Winter Fun in Waterloo, Cedar Falls, and the Cedar Valley

Looking for winter fun in the Waterloo - Cedar Falls area? Here's our list of can't-miss family fun.

It seems everyone in the Waterloo - Cedar Falls area is looking for ways to get out of the house this winter! Especially with how mild the temperature has been the last few weeks. It's a nice break to have a 30 degree day once or twice a week after a couple of colder days. PLUS, fresh air is good for the soul — not to mention it helps to get the wiggles out of the kids.

We put together a list to help you find fun things to do this winter with your family in Waterloo, Cedar Falls, Independence (or wherever you are!) during the last winter months in Iowa:

1. Sledding

Take the kids, find a hill, and hit the snow! You can go any day, any time, and utilize your neighborhood, park, or favorite Cedar Valley sledding place. The next best part is that it doesn't cost a thing.

2. Snowshoeing

Hartman Reserve Nature Center and several other State parks have been offering snowshoe hikes throughout the winter. They are family-friendly and socially distanced. Keep an eye on their website for more events, but feel free to organize your own snowshoe hike at one of the local nature reserves or State parks. Check out the website for State parks with events near you: https://www.mycountyparks.com/

3. Snowball fights

If we get more awesome, fluffy snow, it will be great for snowball fights. And what a great way to let the kids play with the neighbors/friends!

4. Build a snowman, snow person, or snow sculpture

Take some time to build a traditional snowman and give him all the fixings: hat, scarf, carrot nose, charcoal/rock eyes and buttons OR build any other sculpture, person, animal or object that your heart desires!

And after you find your family fun outside in the Cedar Valley, head in for some hot chocolate and snacks to help warm up those little bodies.

*Mom tip: if you don't have any hot chocolate, warmed chocolate milk (milk with chocolate syrup or powder in it) makes a great, unnoticeable substitution*
